Oh for crying out loud. OF COURSE they're ads, and the fact that they are "free" to post here on jaiku or that "OpenMLS" does not charge to list them can't possibly distract from the operative fact that they are SELLING SOMETHING, duh. I hate when people are disingenuous like that! This concept that OpenMSL is just working "for the good of the people" is utterly bogus. It's working to get mindshare, to sell something -- perhaps the real real estate? Perhaps your avatar's reputation enhancement? To be influential in the market somewhere? Seriously, I don't get why it's ok to spam up social media with ads.
I don't particularly appreciate it when people hustle their podcasts and articles, either, when they are paid-for infomercial type publications often anyway. But that's just it, social media is now invaded by marketing companies and they are extremely voracious. It's up to the people to try to beat them back.
Having a "real estate seminar to help noobs" is the oldest trick in the book, champ. I can see through that one. At least when I do that, and others do that, they don't hide it behind this "for the good of the community" and "helping the noobz" crap. It's a loss leader. It's about mindshare. It's about marketshare. Don't pretend it's some sort of altruistic act -- that's misleading. Of course it's inappropriate to hustle real estate ads, and then pretend that a "real estate seminar" regardless of some real help it might give noobs to buy property anywhere, it's about building up lists and audiences and mindshare for whatever it is you ARE selling -- and don't pretend you are NOT.
I seriously do not want to encourage more fakery from companies, and I think it needs to be exposed. Social media will become like our spammed up bulk mail boxes before we know it unless we lay down the tracks NOW.

this is in the comments sections, not in the public chat street, so you have to wish to come into the comments for the side conversation. Furthermore, even if it DOES show up in public chat (and this is confusing), what of it? It's a generic issue. Should the community on twitter or jaiku or other continuous chat services like this tolerate commercial spam trying to sell stuff? It's a generic issue.

I had the question to ask Mitch Kapor who his spiritual and political grandfathers were, what ideologies/religious beliefs/books/people influenced his outlook. So I guess I could just try sending him an email with that question.
As for sparks, that sound like Martin Buber's concept of "raising the sparks," which I guess is actually an ancient Hasidic teaching.
